Kappa Kappa Convention

After a full thirteen hours of sleep, I'm finally rejuvenated from a weekend full of seminars and sisterhood. These past four days at the Kappa Kappa Gamma National Convention have easily been the best of the summer. Not only did I learn a lot about the inner workings of Kappa Kappa Gamma at a national level, but I also got to spend some invaluable time with my sisters. Plus, the whole weekend was Texas themed as the convention was held in Houston, making this Texan one happy gal.

When I finally saw my Creighton sisters Thursday afternoon, it was seriously like one of those movies where the guy and girl run towards each other. But replace the guy with a girl's best friend and you've hit the nail on the head. 

After attending seminars on academic excellence and leadership plus eating lunch at my favorite Houston restaurant Treebeards, it was time for the Presidents Dinner.

All the attendees were introduced to seven of the past eight Fraternity presidents. It was hard not to fall in love with each of them and their devotion to the Fraternity.

Once the dinner was complete, every Kappa had the opportunity to get the autographs of the presidents.

Yeah, we were a little excited after meeting Julie Leshay, Fraternity president from 2010-2014.

We were lucky enough to meet Pris Gerde, the president who chartered our chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Creighton.

Despite our complete exhaustion from a full day of activities, that night was the collegian party. We chatted with some other Kappas (including one from Alpha chapter at Monmouth!), sipped on "blue" lemonade, danced the macarena, and belted out the Kappa Rap. Needless to say, we all fell asleep the second our heads hit the pillow that night.

Saturday began with the alumnae award presentations and a panel with the recipients. It was so inspiring to hear from women whose lives have made an impact on many and who have kept our Fraternity close at heart.

After a finance roundup, philanthropy session, and leadership consultant seminar, we had a little time to take pictures with our lovely Eta Iota chapter flag!

The final dinner on Saturday night was filled with great food and an accomplished keynote speaker. She talked about what being a Kappa means and how far we've come since our earlier days as an organization. And I have to give a shoutout to the food from that night. Filet mignon, gulf shrimp, and three-tier chocolate cake? Yes, please.

Clearly, it was a wonderful weekend spent with sisters from near and far. I've always been proud to wear the letters of Kappa Kappa Gamma, but I think I've fallen in love with Kappa and what we stand for all over again. Sorority life isn't what the media makes it out to be. Being a sorority girl means having lifelong friends and connections to some of the most accomplished women in America. It means always having someone on your side, to love you despite of your flaws. I can't wait to be back on campus in August with these girls again!

New On My Playlist

My closest friends know that my music taste is, well, all over the place. I enjoy listening to the top songs on iTunes, but really like a little more alternative tracks. But I'm from Texas, so you can't forget country! I'm also a sucker for some good Italian music too. Basically, if a song has a good beat, I'll probably like it.

Weekend Update

What a weekend it's been! Let me tell you right now, there's been a multitude of crafting as well as sports-watching in my house. 

On Thursday, I (finally) picked up my photos from Walgreens and completed my scrapbook documenting my semester abroad! I'm in love with it and it's already found a nice home displayed on my dresser. Looking through it tugs at my heart, bringing back all the memories from an awesome time in Rome. Plus, I learned that making a scrapbook isn't as hard as you'd think (more on this in a future post)!

I began working on some wall decor for my new apartment at school on Friday. I'm painting canvases inspired by Lilly Pulitzer state prints for each of my roommates and myself. Once I'm all finished, South Dakota, Texas, and Indiana will be represented! Here's a preview of SD.




My dad, sister, and I spent Friday night downtown at the Nasher Sculpture Center watching "The Way Way Back" on the garden lawn. It was a great movie in an even better environment. The lights strung between oak trees gave off such a southern vibe. I love the idea of watching a movie outdoors in a park and can't wait to do this again as the summer progresses. If you're a Dallas resident, the Nasher hosts a movie in the garden every third Friday, so check it out!










Saturday and Sunday were filled with sports. My dad and I were on the couch both days with our eyes glued to the tv, occasionally taking them off the game to eat some tacos or tortilla soup. But, somehow, not a single game resulted in a win for the team we were rooting for: Texas in the CWS, Texas in the MLB, and USA in the World Cup. You win some, you lose some (and you tie some).

On a side note, I've been using this olive oil-based soap for the past week and really like it. By no means does it live up to my bar of soap from the Italian Riviera, but it still makes my skin feel amazing after using it.




Plus, this phrase that was on the cap of my Sweet Leaf tea made me smile. Sometimes it's nice to think that by being proactive, you can bring luck into your life. I think it hit home because I'm officially a college senior, will be taking the GRE in July, and starting to fill out graduate school applications shortly after.

Time Crunch Cultural Immersion

After glancing through my Facebook newsfeed last night, I was struck by this Elite Daily article. I'd recommend everyone read it; it basically describes the differences between going on a vacation and traveling. Vacation involves relaxation and getaway while travel means immersing oneself in a specific city/language/culture and living like the locals. 

I am one of the lucky few who can call herself a traveler. Spending one week in Rome is very different from my sixteen weeks. However, the opportunity to truly live in another country isn't exactly an option for many people. So, I present to you my tips for becoming a traveler (specifically in Europe) even when on a short trip. 

Chat with the locals in their language.
When you enter a shop, say good morning/afternoon to the worker(s). In Italy, it's seen as rude when you don't greet the shopkeeper or ask, "Come stai?" Making the effort to exchange a quick greeting in a foreign language is something I as well as every real traveler experienced practically every day. Muster up the courage and just go for it. Usually, people really appreciate the attempt.

Be flexible.
So you're lost in Paris? Missed the only train to a small Italian town? Got caught in a torrential downpour while at the Vatican for a papal audience (see above)? Rather than worry, let go and embrace the positives. Travelers learn to go with the flow because things don't always (honestly, rarely) go according to plan. If you have to ask for directions, follow the previous point and ask in the country's native language.

Blend in.
This was hinted at in the article, but I think it makes a bigger difference than you'd think. Wear neutral clothing and leave the shorts and sandals at home. Europeans place a bigger emphasis on dressing nicely. They also tend to dress for the season, not the weather. Yes, that means wear a coat during March in Italy even if it's 70 degrees outside. 

Research places to visit that are off the beaten path.
My two favorite sights in Rome are the Knights of Malta keyhole and Via Margutta. I can honestly say I know about these things solely because I lived in Rome and had the chance to see relatively unknown things the city has to offer. Look up rarely-visited spots to see before you head out. You won't see tourists milling around; you'll experience a more local feel. Adventure outside the center of the city. You'll go home with stories that are unique rather than the norm.


While my Facebook continues to be flooded with pictures from others' European adventures and weekend escapes, I'll continue to remind myself that I can proudly call myself a world traveler.

A Whale of a Summer

Summer is one of the strangest times of year. I feel like everyone is either piled high with work and activities or doing absolutely nada. Oh, what are you up to this summer? Response 1: Nothing, let's hang out! Response 2: Well, I'm interning in a corporate office when I finish a month of summer classes and am headed to Europe with my family next week!

Even though my summers usually lean towards lazing around, my day can instantly be made better based on the clothes I'm wearing. 

Especially if said clothes contain a pattern. Even better yet, a whale pattern.

This Target find is the epitome of a bargain summer top. The number of compliments I've received almost equals the times I've been asked which Vineyard Vines store I bought this at.

And obviously I had to pair this outfit with my brightest pink pants (old, similar here) and summery wedges.

PS If you've ever lived in Italy (or even visited for an extended time), you'll love and hate this Buzzfeed article. By #4 I was teary-eyed; I legitimately frequented the Spanish Steps between classes. 19 and 20 also hit me pretty hard. Can you tell I miss Italy?

Monthly Musings

How is June already halfway over?! This summer seems to be flying by (even though my sisters just got out of school). With this passage of time, here are some things I've been mulling over in June.

As "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit has finally begun to be played regularly on the radio, I've started frequenting Italy's Top 20 for music. I'm currently obsessed with Coldplay's "A Sky Full of Stars" and "Stolen Dance" by Milky Chance. I've also fallen in love with "Sail Into the Sun" by Gentlemen Hall (thanks for the recommendation Barb). They're all fun songs that are atop my summer playlist!

With the Kappa Kappa Gamma National Convention (which I'll be attending!) coming up, these Kendra Scott earrings would be perfect to represent the blue and blue.

I've never been a huge America's Got Talent fan, but I might start tuning in more often to root on Jaycob Curlee...

I'm a sucker for adorable YouTube videos (who isn't?). I discovered this amazingly cute video after the conclusion of the French Open. Djokovic has won over my heart. And if you loved that, you'll love this Buzzfeed article.

A few months ago, I learned that I was accepted into an internship program at NYU Medical Center for July and August. I've been busy hitting up the Dallas shopping scene, picking out business attire as well as trying out some different perfumes. I've decided I am extremely picky about scents, yet absolutely love two: Elie Saab Le Parfum and Bond No. 9 Central Park South. Both are strongly feminine with a hint of floral that lasts all day long.

When in Rome (probably the most cliche phrase but whatever), I bought a black Le Pliage Longchamp bag. It's absolutely perfect for carrying around all my stuff, and will be especially useful in New York this summer! I've fallen in love with this limited edition print and might just have to splurge since it's on sale.

June also means the return of ABC Family's hit show Pretty Little Liars. In all honesty, this show is my guilty pleasure, and after the summer premiere, there are even more questions I need to know the answers to (typical)!

With my birthday less than a month away, maybe some of these musings will turn into something more tangible... I guess we'll see!
